John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26 in 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. His first major role was in 1936 in the film The Big Trail. It wasn't until John Ford cast him in Stagecoach (1939) that he finally achieved stardom. He appeared in over 200 films, including many early Westerns that are no longer available. He won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit (1969). He was also nominated for Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and The Alamo (1960). John Wayne died of cancer on June 11, 1979.

Sands Of Iwo Jima(1949) VHS
One of the all-time great war movies, a moving re-creation of the American assault on Japan in the last days of World War II. John Wayne earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a hard-nosed Marine sergeant; John Agar, Forrest Tucker co-star. Superb battle scenes were filmed at the actual locations. 110 min.

Blood Alley(1955) VHS
John Wayne is at his two-fisted best as a seafaring tough guy who leads a group of Red Chinese villagers through the Straits of Formosa to freedom in Hong Kong. William Wellman directed; with Lauren Bacall, Paul Fix and Anita Ekberg. 115 min.

North To Alaska(1960) VHS

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance(1962) VHS
John Ford's epic western stars James Stewart as a U.S. senator who returns to his old home after 25 years for the funeral of old friend John Wayne. When asked about Wayne by a reporter, Stewart tells of the story of his friendship with Wayne and how he saved his life from sadistic outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Vera Miles, Edmond O'Brien, Andy Devine and Woody Strode also star in this classic. 122 min.

How The West Was Won(1963) VHS
The sprawling story of three generations of 19th-century pioneers, and their odyssey from New England to the frontier, is a true western classic. The all-star cast includes John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart, Carroll Baker, Gregory Peck and Lee J. Cobb, and Spencer Tracy narrates. Co-directed by John Ford, Henry Hathaway and George Marshall. 165 min.

El Dorado(1967) VHS
Howard Hawks successfully reworks his "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne as a gunslinger who returns to El Dorado, which he visited a year before and found an ugly range war brewing pitting nasty land baron Ed Asner against a family headed by R.G. Armstrong. Now, Wayne is joined by new pal James Caan to stop Asner and help drunken lawman Robert Mitchum keep peace. Charlene Holt, Michele Carey and Christopher George also star. 126 min.

One of John Wayne's best-loved movies. He won his only Oscar as Rooster Cogburn, the boozing, one-eyed ex-marshal. Kim Darby is the young girl who hires Wayne to find her father's killers and Glen Campbell is a bounty hunter in this touching, thrill-packed Western. 126 min.

Chisum(1970) VHS
